Organization: Nuclear Innovation Institute


Job location: 620 Tomlinson Drive, Port Elgin, Ontario with occasional regional travel


Duration: May 4 to August 21, 2026 (16 weeks)


Hours: 35 hours per week (Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with occasional evening and weekend work as required)


Wage: $22.00/hour

Position overview:

The Education Assistant will support the Director of Outreach and Education in delivering engaging STEM outreach programming across Bruce, Grey, and Huron Counties. This role focuses on raising awareness of STEM education, energy and environmental issues through hands-on activities, school visits, community events and summer programming.

 

This position involves working closely with NII staff, educators, students, and community partners to ensure the successful delivery of outreach programs. The Education Assistant will contribute to program planning, facilitation, logistics and day-to-day operations that support NII’s education and community engagement goals.


Primary job duties:


Support the delivery of STEM outreach programming

  • Assist in planning and delivering hands-on STEM activities for students in schools and community settings

  • Assist with NII’s Science Olympics and Science Roadshow programs with event setup, registration, facilitation and breakdown

  • Help adapt activities for different age groups and learning styles


Assist with summer camps and youth programming

  • Support the organization and facilitation of a two-week summer day camp

  • Help prepare materials, set up activities and manage daily camp logistics

  • Supervise and engage with campers in a safe, inclusive and positive learning environment

  • Provide general program and administrative support to the outreach team

 

Represent NII at community events and programs

  • Attend local festivals, fairs, and community events on behalf of the Nuclear Innovation Institute

  • Help deliver interactive demonstrations and answer questions from students, parents and the public

  • Promote NII programs and opportunities in a professional and approachable manner


Qualifications and education requirements:


  • Currently enrolled in, or recently graduated from, a post-secondary program

  • Experience working with children, youth or the public in an educational or recreational setting

  • Interest in STEM education, energy and environmental issues

  • Ability to travel locally to schools and community sites as required


Required competencies:


  • Strong interpersonal skills and an engaging, professional demeanor

  • Comfortable working with both children and adults in a variety of settings

  • Highly organized, reliable and able to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a small team

  • Excellent verbal communication skills and confidence speaking to groups

  • Experience in working with multiple stakeholders, clients and colleagues in a fast-paced environment

  • Ability to develop relationships with educators, community partners, and the public

  • Experienced in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
