New report: Is rural Ontario ready for an EV future?
Easy access to quick-charging electric vehicle charging stations is a major factor in determining where electric vehicle (EV) owners choose to spend travel dollars, says new NII study.

Regions like Bruce, Grey and Huron counties risk losing tourist business unless they expand places for Ontario’s growing number of EV drivers to plug in.

More than 83% of the 528 EV drivers surveyed believe it is “difficult” or “very difficult” to access public charging in Bruce, Grey, Huron.

Across the region, there are just 45 accessible charging stations. Three-quarters are Level 2 chargers, requiring a lengthier wait than their Level 3 charger counterparts.

For road trip vacations and weekend getaways, more than 70% of EV drivers stated they would only choose or would give preference to locations where they know they can access public charging infrastructure.

When travelling in their EV, only 13% of EV drivers prefer to use overnight charging stations (Level 2 chargers). By comparison, 42% prefer highway stop locations (Level 3).

Global EV sales are increasing. By 2035, it is expected that there will be approximately 2.8 million EVs on the road in Ontario.
